DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – A male great white shark measuring 12 feet, 6 inches long and weighing over 1,400 pounds was tracked swimming off the coast of Daytona Beach, Florida at 6:25 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 12, 2019.

This adult white shark named ‘Hal’ was tagged by OCEARCH off the coast of Nova Scotia on September 29, 2018.

Great White Sharks Come To Florida For Spring Break
Florida is a top Spring Break destination for both college students and great white sharks.

A 2014 study by NOAA Fisheries found that great white sharks are present primarily between Massachusetts and New Jersey during the summer, off Florida during winter, and have a broad distribution along the U.S. East Coast during spring and fall.

During winter, most white sharks are found off the northeast coast of Florida, the Florida Keys, and sometimes in the Gulf of Mexico.

The great white shark population has been growing along the U.S. East Coast, according to the study.
