PFAS Action Act of 2019 Passes House Of Representatives

WASHINGTON, D.C – Today. the U.S. House of Representatives passed with Congressman Bill Posey’s (R-Rockledge) support the PFAS Action Act of 2019 (H.R. 535) which takes action on PFAS environmental contamination.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and/or perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) – chemicals that are used to extinguish aircraft fires – were detected in groundwater at Patrick Air Force Base, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Cocoa Beach, and Satellite Beach, Florida.

The chemicals are known to cause cancer, birth defects, liver damage, thyroid damage, increased uric acid levels, increased cholesterol, and immune system damage.

Under the bill, federal funding would be available to states and communities such as Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach for the removal of drinking, ground, or surface water contaminated by a perfluorinated compound.

“This legislation will help lead to healthier communities with cleaner environments and safer drinking water,” said Congressman Posey.

“When we find that long exposure to certain chemicals and substances can lead to serious health problems, we have a responsibility to act.”

PFAS has now been confirmed in the water of more than 1,400 communities, including nearly 300 military installations.

However, some officials in the Trump administration oppose the bill.

“If H.R. 535 were presented to the President, his senior advisors would recommend that he veto the bill,” the Office of Management and Budget stated in a policy opposition statement.

“…the bill would create considerable litigation risk, set problematic and unreasonable rulemaking timelines and precedents, and impose substantial, unwarranted costs on Federal, State, and local agencies and other key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.”
