French Bulldogs
French Bulldogs have taken the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) top spot for the most popular dog breed of 2022, ending the 31-year reign of the Labrador Retriever.
The AKC, the world’s largest registry of purebred dogs, uses registration statistics to rank the most popular breeds of the year.
The French Bulldog’s popularity has surged over the last decade, rising from No. 14 in 2012 to taking the No. 1 spot in 2022.
The breed’s smart, compact size and adaptable nature make them ideal for families and single owners, as well as city-dwellers living in apartments and smaller homes.
The top five breeds of 2022, aside from the French Bulldog, are the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, and Poodle, respectively.
Other breeds that made major jumps in popularity from 2021 to 2022 include the American Hairless Terrier, Gordon Setter, Italian Greyhound, and Anatolian Shepherd Dog.
Newly recognized breeds such as the Mudi and Russian Toy debuted on the list at No. 150 and No. 144, respectively.
At the bottom of the list for 2022 are the Sloughi, Norwegian Lundehund, and English Foxhound.
The AKC recognizes 200 breeds, including those in the AKC Foundation Stock Service and the Miscellaneous Class.
The Bracco Italiano became the 200th breed fully recognized by the AKC in July 2022 and will debut in the registration rankings for 2023.
