COCOA, Florida – A severe tornado warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Melbourne for Central Brevard County in east central Florida. The warning is effective until 700 PM EDT, as a severe thunderstorm that can produce a tornado is moving northeast at 30 mph. The warning was issued at 631 PM EDT on Thursday, April 27th, 2023.
Residents of the affected areas are advised to take cover immediately. The tornado and quarter-sized hail pose a threat to anyone caught without shelter, and mobile homes are likely to be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles is also expected, as well as tree damage.
The dangerous storm will be near Merritt Island around 650 PM EDT and is expected to reach Cape Canaveral, Port Canaveral, and Jetty Park around 700 PM EDT. Georgiana is also expected to be impacted by the tornadic thunderstorm.
Precautionary measures that residents can take include moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoiding windows, and protecting themselves from flying debris. If caught outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, residents should move to the closest substantial shelter immediately.
