Volunteers from Brevard County Receive 2nd-Place Honors at SHINE Awards

Viera, Florida - The Florida Department of Elder Affairs' SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Annual Awards Ceremony honored volunteers from Brevard County with second-place.

The SHINE Awards Ceremony celebrates the contributions of more than 450 volunteers from the state of Florida.

Brevard County volunteers' award was based on the percentage of Medicare beneficiaries served by volunteers in counties with populations between 250,000 to 999,999 people.

Last year, SHINE volunteers in Brevard County had nearly 6,000 contacts with Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers, which is a 35 percent increase from the previous year.  Additionally, volunteers assisted or reached almost 9,000 clients at events in the community, including health fairs and presentations.  Of the nearly 6,000 client contacts, more than 1,100 were with clients that are on Medicare due to a disability and over 2,700 were clients with low incomes.

SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is operated throughout the state in partnership with the Area Agencies on Aging.  The program provides free and unbiased education and counseling for Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers.  Trained SHINE volunteers help elders understand and receive the health insurance coverage they need through Medicare, Medicaid, prescription assistance, Long-Term Care planning and insurance, and other health care issues.

If you are interested in volunteering for the SHINE program, please contact Tammy Harris at Brevard County Housing and Human Services Department (321) 633-2007 or [email protected] or Lynne Meagher, Area Volunteer Coordinator at 321-752-8080.
